Alone at last: Tom Cruise and Katie enjoyed a quiet night in Manhattan together tonight, without their daughter - tomorrow is Katie's 33rd birthday


They've had their hands full with their five-year-old for the last few days, but tonight Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes enjoyed some precious adult-only time.

The past few days have been filled with one very public tantrum, several trips to the children's playground at Manhattan's Chelsea Pier, a visit to the circus and today, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

It's been like their own particular imagining of the Twelve Days of Christmas, tailored entirely to Suri, which is lovely, but it's nice to see the couple take their mom and dad hats off for a while.


Because Hollywood stars they may be, but Tom and Katie (especially the latter) are rarely seen without their progeny; in fact, they are often carrying her, or seemingly attempting to humour the little beauty.

It's fair to say that they cater to every whim; doting isn't the right word.

But for once, after making sure the apple of their eye was suitably entertained (and more importantly, exhausted) Tom, 49 , whisked his wife into the night on the eve of her 33rd birthday.

It was a low-key outing for Katie, who lavishes extravagant birthday gifts and parties on little Suri but obviously prefers to keep her anniversaries casual.

The couple, both wearing jeans and warm jackets, headed hand-in-hand to their Manhattan apartment to see how renovations are coming along.

They're staying at an Upper West hotel while their home undergoes this work, and returned back there soon afterwards for a quiet dinner.

Can we come too? Katie's mother Kathleen and father Martin joined the couple on their night out


Katie has also been attending a dance studio in the city, and supportive Tom has accompanied her every night.

But after eating, Katie changed her outfit then let down her hair, before the couple picked up their daughter for the next segment of their evening, and Tom was soon cradling her in his arms.

The big day is, of course, tomorrow, so there are more festivities planned, but Katie is more focused on preparing the perfect Christmas for her daughter, than having a huge birthday party.

According to In Touch Weekly magazine, the total of the gifts Suri wants for the festive season comes to a staggering $130,000

A source told the publication: 'Her number one wish is a pony.

'Even though she has everything she could ever want, Suri asked for diamond earrings and beautiful dresses, like a fairy princess gown.

Throwing a good old temper tantrum in public is a little girl's prerogative - and clearly Suri Cruise is no exception.

The five-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes is seen here becoming tearful after apparently getting into a strop with her mother in a New York toy store.

It is unclear what Suri was getting in such a tizz about - however the youngster quickly got her Hollywood smile back.

Katie managed to allay her daughter's anguish with a lollipop and some toy purchases yesterday from the FAO Schwartz store.

Suri was wearing a pretty pink dress for the outing with her mother.

Earlier, 32-year-old Katie took her daughter to a gymnastics class, where Suri arrived in gold shoes and a tiara.

And today Suri seemed to be on good form as she went for another outing in the Big Apple, and this time daddy Tom came along too.

Cruise arrived back to New York this morning after globe-trotting to promote his new movie, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

The 49-year-old actor was pictured stepping off a helicopter after jetting back to the city before getting into a waiting car to meet his family.

'Her number one wish is a pony,' a source told the publication, which claims her father has already found a stable for the pet near their home in Beverly Hills.

For most five-year-olds stepping onto a slippery ice rink can be a terrifying experience.

But Suri Cruise took to the ice like a duck to water as she glided around with the help of her father Tom.

The pair were joined by wife and mother Katie Holmes who played a supporting role by closely following them.


She also got into the festive spirit by donning an elaborately patterned jumper.

The trio enjoyed a family day out in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the Oscar-nominated actor, 49, has been filming his latest movie.

On the ice, Suri gripped on to her father’s hands to steady herself around the rink, but looked full of confidence.

She wore a cute bright pink and grey dress, with matching pink tights along with a light pink cardigan.

Mr Cruise opted for a dark green polo-neck jumper and blue jeans as he helped his youngest, but the freezing temperatures saw him also slip into a black padded coat to avoid getting too cold.

The family had spent last Sunday taking in the shops of the US city before hitting the ice at the end of a busy weekend.

Just days earlier Mr Cruise and Miss Holmes, 32, had celebrated their five year wedding anniversary. They were married in a lavish wedding at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy in 2006.

The Mission: Impossible star has been in Pittsburgh for a few months now, filming One Shot, where he plays ex-military investigator Jack Reacher in the film.

His character investigates a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims and is based on a book in Lee Child’s crime series.

It is not unusual for the trio to travel together.

In 2010, Miss Homes claimed she never goes more than a week-and-a-half without seeing her husband.

Suri chose not to wear a coat on the ice, despite her mother admitting in the past she has been embarrassed at seeing pictures of her daughter walking around in winter without a coat.

Despite their wealth and cloistered lifestyles, even celebrities are not immune to the bite of the cold, as Katie Holmes proved yesterday.

To be fair, the 32-year-old could've hidden away in a trailer on the set of husband Tom Cruise's latest film in Pittsburgh.

But the dutiful wife, there to support Tom, 49 , on One Shot, and the couple's four-year-daughter wanted to see their loved one in action.


So decked out in adorable matching fluffy cape jackets, Katie in dark brown and Suri is polar white, they waited.

Katie held two cups which no doubt contained warm liquid to warm their cockles, and a few blankets.

As they both shivered, Katie's nose appeared to turn Rudolph red - indicating just how bitter the weather is in Pennsylvania.

But it was all worth it when Tom took a break in filming and nipped over to visit his girls.

He and Katie shared a look of mutual affection after he finished filming action scenes.

And now, the magazine alleges that he is eyeballing pieces from Elizabeth Taylor jaw-dropping collection, due to go under the hammer this year.

Suri's jewels currently include a replica of her mother's five-carat diamond and rose gold engagement ring and a charm bracelet worn by Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins.

But Tom Cruise seems to be taking rather a few breaks from the set.

The Mission: Impossible took daughter Suri and wife Katie Holmes on a ride at Schenley Plaza in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he is on currently on location.

Yesterday, the girls visited Tom, 49, on set for his new film based on the 2005 novel by Lee Child.

The crime thriller follows a homicide investigator as he attempts to solve a case involving a military sniper who shot five random victims.

Little Suri lost: Miss Cruise left in tears as she nearly takes off without her comforter

She might be a style icon for many but at the end of the day Suri Cruise is still a little girl.

And while her wardrobe might be packed full of fashionable clothes there is one accessory that the she can’t be without – her blanket.

Suri, five, was left devastated when her favourite comforter was absent from the helicopter she and Katie Holmes were travelling in.

She was seen clutching several toys and followed by her mom the little girl clenched her eyes shut and became very tense as she headed towards the already whirring chopper.

Once on board, Suri let rip a barrage of tears, sobbing as she stared out the window.

Scared: The little girl appears to be scared of the noisy vehicle and has to be carried by her mother


The little girl could not be consoled and was left with tears streaming down her face as she and her mother waited for the private aircraft to fly off.

But luckily just before take-off a member of staff managed to find her blanket and get it to the little girl in the nick of time.

Little Suri’s mood changed and she was seen waving gratefully to the man who had helped her.

Her husband, Tom Cruise has been splitting his time between LA, Miami and New York as he works on his own movie Rock Of Ages.
