'People in the US haven’t a clue who Cheryl is': Former Frasier star Jane Leeves on British women breaking America

By Daily Mail Reporter

Snubbed Stateside: Former Frasier star Jane Leeves says Cheryl Cole's success at home means nothing in Hollywood

Cheryl Cole has this week learned just how brutal the American showbiz industry can be.

There are few female British stars who have made it big Stateside - Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightly among them.

Former Frasier star Jane Leeves is also among the select group, and has admitted even she was clueless as to who Cheryl Cole was.

'People in the US haven’t a clue who Cheryl is,' the 50-year-old says. 'I actually asked someone: "Is she a pop star?"

'Yes, she is a huge star in the UK, but nobody knows her here.'

'I do have sympathy for English people coming over to America,' Jane tells today's Daily Mirror.

Star: Jane (far left) became a household name starring as Daphne Moon on long-running sitcom Frasier

'I went over when I was young and stupid, but now English people come over when they are already successful in Britain. It is so much harder for them. They don’t have the time to pursue things.'

The Sussex-raised actress moved to LA when she was 21, and worked for over a year selling souvenirs as she attended acting school and auditions.

She eventually won a small part on Murphy Brown before landing her big break as Daphne Moon on the hit sitcom Frasier.

'It is a fickle business': Jane says she 'has sympathy' for British stars like Cheryl who find it tough to break the U.S. market

'It is a fickle business, but I have worked very hard,' she tells the paper. 'I have always been a hard worker. You have to have faith it will work out.

'Now when I look back at my younger self, I think, "My god, I was brave", but I’d never want to change anything because it’s been so fantastic.'

Jane is starting work on a new sitcom, Hot In Cleveland, co-starring Betty White, Wendie Mallick and Valerie Bertinelli, and says she finds it refreshing that none of the stars have succumbed to Hollywood pressure to go under the knife.

Jane is now starring in Hot In Cleveland with Betty white, Wendie Mallick and Valerie Bertinelli

None of us have been injected or pushed from pillar to post – and that is extremely rare in America.

'As an actress, it seems such a bizarre thing to do to yourself by pretty much immobilising your face.

'You can tell when someone has done it. I admire women who haven’t.'

How not to look classy! TOWIE's Lydia Bright wears Kate's dress but looks less than stylish

By Daily Mail Reporter

Not classy! Lydia Bright tried to recreate the same ensemble as Kate today, she did not quite pull off the look

Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge turned heads in her £175 beige Reiss dress last week but when Lydia Bright tried to recreate the same ensemble today, she did not quite pull off the look.

The Only Way Is Essex star was spotted strutting into a London office with a Selfridges bag in tow, wearing the same high street dress as Kate.

But instead of displaying a classic royal style, Lydia’s ill-fitting dress was not flattering and the Essex girl even had VPL.

Just like Kate, she also paired the above-the-knee number with black heels but Lydia’s clunky shoes were anything but dainty.

The camel-coloured ‘Shola’ design is from one of the Duchess’s favourite brands and she wore the Reiss frock to meet Barack and Michelle Obama during their UK visit last week.

After the new bride showed off her impeccable figure in the design, the fashion chain’s website crashed and the dress sold out within 24 hours.

At least the handbag's different! Lydia wears the same Reiss dress and black heels like Kate but carries a different bag

VPL: Lydia was displaying visible panty line through the dress as we caught a glimpse of her underwear

Obviously Lydia was one of the women to flock to the site to quickly grab herself the same dress.

After the mania, it was advertised on eBay for £600 and a £30 copy is being prepared by Tesco.

Reiss then announced that the dress will be re-released in five to six weeks to cater for the demand.

Special occasion: Kate wore her Reiss dress last week while meeting Michelle Obama (right) and President Obama

But after more investigation into the British fashion chain, it was found that the original Reiss dress was manufactured by women paid only 99p an hour in a poor suburb of Romania’s capital.

It was produced for less than £15 by seamstresses earning significantly less than the average salary for textile workers in the Eastern European nation.

The 170 employees of clothing firm Rimcor Ex work in a factory which resembles an industrial compound with bars on the windows, 8ft walls and solid metal fences.

Kim Kardashian shows off her own nautical style as she sets sail with fiancé Kris Humphries

By Daily Mail Reporter

Riviera style: Kim Kardashian shows off her $2million engagement ring and a purple playsuit as she prepares to board a boat in Monaco

With a new $2million engagement ring on her finger, Kim Kim Kardashian has to make sure her outfits look equally as glamorous.

So the socialite made sure she look super chic as she showed off her own nautical style as she boarded a yacht in Monaco.

The reality TV star displayed her famous curves in a figure-hugging purple playsuit and bronze accessories as she and fiancé Kris Humphries jumped on a speedboat out to their yacht.

Hoping to catch a candid romantic snap of the newly-engaged couple, the 30-year-old was seen pouting for the camera.

But it appears something had caught Humphries' attention so he wasn't a willing participant for her photo.

The couple, who have only been dating six months, arrived in Monaco late last week.

'Come on Kris, pose': Kardashian puckers up for self-portrait - unaware her fiancé is distracted

They attended their first public event since getting engaged at the Amber Lounge Fashion Show on Friday, before joining Prince Albert and his fiancee Charlene Wittstock for dinner at the palace on Saturday.

Kardashian and Humphries got engaged on May 18 - but only announced it last week.

The New Jersey Nets player, 26, proposed with a 20.5 carat diamond ring, writing 'will you marry me?' in rose petals on her bed.

Her family have all spoken of their joy at the news and given Humphries the seal of approval.

Just cruising: The couple headed back on a boat to the luxury yacht they are staying on

Older sister Kourtney told People magazine: 'He fits in [with the family] already. I think they're just themselves, and I think that's the most important thing.

'Kim is totally herself in front of him. Everything is easy, comfortable, no stress.'

After their trip to Monaco, Kardashian is expected in London next week to promote her perfume.

As Cheryl and Simon go to war, his people claim she asked for £2.5m to return to British X-Factor

By BEN TODD and PAUL REVOIR

Open neck: Simon Cowell - baring his hairy chest - returned to Britain's Got Talent last night but made no mention of the Cheryl Cole controversy

Only a month ago Simon Cowell told the world Cheryl Cole was ‘special’.

Last night, however, the TV mogul and the pop star were at war – through their ‘people’ – amid claims her advisers demanded £2.5million for her to return to the UK X Factor after her shock axing from the U.S. version of the show.

It came after ITV issued a statement confirming that the Girls Aloud star will not feature in its judging panel for the TV talent contest.

Holed up: Cheryl has not been seen since returning from America

Cowell himself has remained unusually silent on the issue – other than a subtle reference on last night’s Britain’s Got Talent, where he also raised eyebrows by arriving for a turn as guest judge in a suit and unbuttoned shirt which bared his hairy chest.

But according to senior sources at both his production company Syco, and ITV, associates of Mrs Cole believed to be led by pop star William Adams – known as Will.i.am and who became her manager a month ago – wanted the broadcaster to agree to the huge fee.

Happier times: Cheryl and Simon smile together on the judging panel of the X Factor in December 2009

The friend said: ‘Will.i.am doesn’t want her to have anything to do with Cowell anymore. Cowell thought she would come running back and take the UK job – but why would she when she’s been hung out to dry in the U.S..’

Since her humiliating sacking, Mrs Cole has been uncontactable – with sources suggesting she did not even know of the demands allegedly being made on her behalf.

She has refused to take telephone calls from TV executives, including Cowell.

Allies: Cheryl with her new manager Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas who is believed to have demanded the huge fee for her to return to X Factor

Within hours, it was confirmed that Tulisa Contostavlos – from pop band N-Dubz – was joining the show alongside Louis Walsh, U.S. pop star Kelly Rowland and Take That singer Gary Barlow.

An X Factor source revealed: ‘There was a Plan A we already had which we’re happy with and is a great team. It got to a point with Cheryl where we had to move on.

New panel: Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland will join Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh on the judging panel

That public statement also signalled the end of Cowell and Mrs Cole’s professional relationship, which began when she joined the X Factor in 2008.

Even a month ago, he said of Mrs Cole: ‘She’s got a great ability to communicate. She’s a great judge. She’s smart. You meet someone special a few times in your life and this girl is special.’

Within days of that comment, Mrs Cole had surprisingly axed Hilary Shaw – her manager since 2005 – to hand control to Mr Adams, who has found worldwide fame with the Black Eyed Peas.
