JR Martinez gets longest standing ovation ever on Dancing with the Stars as poignant tribute to war heroes reduces judges to tears

By Amelia Proud

Not a dry eye in the house: J.R Martinez moves everyone at the studio with his performance

Everyone has a story, and tonight the Dancing with the Stars hopefuls got the chance to reveal their most memorable year through music and movement.

And there wasn't a dry eye in the house when Iraq war veteran J.R. Martinez revealed that his most memorable year was when he was seriously wounded and scarred.

Since the first week of the competition, Martinez has proved himself one of the ones to watch with strong performances and a natural flair for fluid movement - and his heart-wrenching routine tonight only cemented this, with only Len adding a note of criticism about J.R's use of his arms.

'The thing is, we have to speak to justify our marks. For me, it could have been a little bit more musical through the arms, so ... J.R., you understand,' he said.

Heart-wrenching: The All My Children star brings the audience to its collective feet for the longest time in the history of the series

Frontrunners, again: It might not have been as moving, but Ricki's technically-adept dance finishes top with the judges

The audience felt differently and joined in a standing ovation that lasted longer than any previously. Martinez had danced to Tim McGraw's If You're Reading This, which tells the story of wives reading letters notifying them that their loved ones are never to come home.

In the audience was his guest, teenager Jenna Bullen, who suffered burns to more than 95 per cent of her body in a hot water heater accident when she was three.

Sensual: Ricki remembers the year she met the love of her life, which translated into her dance with Derek

Recent pain: David Arquette relives the 'hurt' from his marriage split as Courteney Cox watches

Proud daughter: Courteney Cox and daughter Coco watch and clap, the seven-year-old seeming incredibly proud of her father

Tribute: Rob Kardashian pays tribute to his late father by dancing to one of the attorney's favourite songs, Fly Me to the Moon

Martinez even shed a few tears himself, but Carrie Ann Inaba struggled the most.

'Heroes are normal people who do extraordinary things,' she said as she sobbed.

'Tonight you did something extraordinary.'

Martinez earned 26 points for the dance, as did Chynna Phillips, who danced to her band Wilson Phillips' smash hit, Hold On, to mark the year she battled depression and substance abuse. Two members of her trio, Carnie Wilson and Wendy Phillips watched from the audience.

That's our boy!: Ron is cheered on by his mother and sisters, as he is every week

Hold On: Chynna Phillips relives her struggles with substance abuse as she dances to her greatest hit

Martinez and Phillips saw the season’s first nine scores of the season, but Ricki Lake with the show's lucky charm, Derek Hough, blew them out of the water.

In another rumba, Lake attempted to convey the memories of 2010, the year her rented home was burned to the ground but she met the love of her life.

Though Carrie Ann Inaba didn't see the link when she announced: 'Ricki Lake, you are on fire,' there was no doubting the judge's admiration for the presenter's technical skills.

Lady in red: Kristen Cavallari looks stunning in crimson for her dance with Mark Ballas

Graceful: Nancy keeps her dress in place, but is underwhelming

Carson Kressley tangoed to celebrate the year that he launched Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and entertained the audience and judges alike. He was awarded eight and seven scores.

Even the presence of ever-loyal estranged wife, Courteney Cox and their daughter Coco, wasn't enough to rally David Arquette into a show-stopping performance, despite using his recent marriage split and car accident as inspiration.

Awkward: Chaz is popular with judges and crowd alike, but his technique is woeful

Raunchy: Hope's outfit has an 80s' quality to it, as she relives the World Cup Finals defeat

But the Kardashian clan should see Rob's respectable middle-ranking as a success after his performances in the series so far, he chose Fly Me to the Moon as a tribute to their late father.

Nancy Grace managed to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions thanks to a fitted gown and a slow routine, but her Moon River routine for her daughter was dull.

Confident: Ricki must know she has her footwork off pat as she attends rehearsals earlier

Good looking: Kristen and Rob look great as they rehearse, but didn't wow when the moment came

Hope Solo’s sporting disappointments were lost somewhat in a revealing outfit with 80s' style crimped hair lending a silliness to the talented athlete.

Chaz Bono, despite his popularity factor with the judges, performed terribly, and barely moved enough for his routine to be considered a dance, though his choice of his father Sonny's Laugh at Me was well received, especially by his teary girlfriend.

Kristin Cavallari was cheered on by former fiancé Jay Cutler as she sizzled in scarlet to secure 24 points.

Contrasting fortunes: Ricki and Chaz would end the night at the top and bottom of the judges reckoning, but were still plugging away in the afternoon

Sweet pie of mine! Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose is unrecognisable after piling on the pounds

By Sarah Bull

He was once a pin-up for millions of rock and roll fans throughout the world.

But it seems Axl Rose's poster boy days are over, judging by photographs of the 49-year-old singer performing with the band in Brazil last night.

The Guns N' Roses frontman was unrecognisable as he took to the stage at the Rock In Rio music festival, with his attempts to cover up his larger frame in a coat failing miserably.

What happened? A significantly larger Axl Rose was unrecongisable as he performed with Guns N' Roses in Rio, Brazil, last night

Changing figure: Axl's new look is a far cry from his slimline figure at the height of his fame

Rose appeared to have gained a significant amount of weight in recent months, with his slimline frame at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards a distant memory.

The rocker teamed his yellow coat with a black hat and sunglasses, with the whole ensemble contributing to his bizarre appearance.

It's not the first time Rose's weight has sparked concern, as he previously shocked fans with his overweight look in January 2010.

Belting it out: The group performed songs including Sweet Child of Mine and Welcome To The Jungle at the Rock In Rio festival

His size also led to him being labelled a 'fat Botox-faced wig wearer' by rival rocker Scott Weiland.

But his weight gain appears to have continued over the past year and a half, with Rose looking entirely different as he performed in Brazil.

Gearing up for the performance, Rose told eager fans he was concerned that the pouring rain would make the stage treacherous for the concert.

He said: 'Good evening… good morning! Please bear with us and give us a little second here to figure out what to do about not falling on our asses.

Back in the day: Axl (centre) with Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler, Duff McKagan and Slash

'I'm going to try to focus on singing rather than running around like an idiot. I'm better at being an idiot. We want everybody to be careful.'

The group then delighted fans with tracks including Sweet Child of Mine, Live and Let Die and Welcome to the Jungle.

The band's performance was their first since last December, and came ahead of the Guns N' Roses' US tour which begins later this month.

The tour will start in Orlando on October 28th and finishes on December 1st in Auburn Hills.

Emergency: Dr Richelle Cooper told the court today that she believed Jackson had been dead for an hour when he arrived at hospital

Michael Jackson's doctor was talking on the phone and texting in the hour before he found the King of Pop in cardiac arrest, the court heard today in Dr Conrad Murray's trial for involuntary manslaughter.

According to records shown to jurors, Murray was on the phone for 46 minutes of the hour before Jackson stopped breathing.

The calls included a social call with a Houston waitress and a half-hour conversation with his office.

Hysterical: Paris, left, Prince Michael and Blanket Jackson, cried as they were told their father had died an emergency room doctor told court

The records detailing the use of Murray's two mobile phones were presented by the prosecution in a bid to show the doctor was diverted during the time he was supposed to be tending to his patient.

Two executives from U.S. phone companies gave evidence that Murray was busy on his phone on the morning of June 25, 2009.

Houston physician Dr Joanne Prashad said she spoke to Murray that fateful morning to get advice on one of his heart patients who was about to undergo surgery in Texas.

Prosecutors showed records of Murray's phone calls from the hours before Jackson's death to show that the singer had other things on his mind - getting his $150,000 a month deal to serve as Jackson's personal physician approved, running his medical practices and fielding calls from mistresses.

One of Murray's former patients, Las Vegas salesman Robert Russell, detailed one of the calls Murray took in the hour before Jackson's death last week.

Mr Russell praised Murray in testimony, crediting the doctor with saving his life, but said he had grown distant after going to work for Jackson

Meanwhile, hospital doctors told the court today they never stood a chance of saving Jackson on the day he died.

Emergency staff tried for one hour and thirteen minutes to revive the King of Pop in hospital after he was already diagnosed as being clinically dead.

Hospital staff tried CPR, pumping oxygen into the performer's lungs and used three different heart-starting drugs, but all to no avail.

'Mr Jackson died long before he became a patient,' said casualty Dr Richelle Cooper.

Dr Cooper testified that she first pronounced Jackson as being dead at 12:57pm based on information paramedics relayed from the scene of Jackson's collapse at his rented Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009.

'At that time, I felt confident clinically pronouncing him dead,' Dr Cooper told the court.

But Jackson's personal doctor insisted that life-saving efforts should carry on even though the star wasn't breathing and he was rushed to hospital where he wasn't officially pronounced dead until 2:26pm.

On trial: Dr Conrad Murray listens to testimony seated near his attorney today

In all the time she was trying to revive Jackson, Dr Cooper said she never detected a pulse. 'I have never previously given a time of death in the field and then had a patient brought to me for more treatment before it happened on June 25, 2009,' she added.

Giving evidence on the fifth day of the trial at Los Angeles Superior Court, Dr Cooper denied the lengths hospital staff took to try and resuscitate Jackson had anything to do with him being a celebrity.

The emergency physician at the University of California Los Angeles Hospital said Murray never mentioned giving Jackson the powerful hospital anaesthetic Propofol.

She added that she hadn't heard of the strong sedative being used anywhere outside a surgery ward.

Dr Cooper said Jackson appeared to be clinically dead when he was brought into the casualty ward.

'He didn't have a pulse. His pupils were fixed and dilated,' she said.

Dr Cooper testified she never asked Murray to sign a death certificate because, by the time he was brought to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Jackson became her patient.

'Mr Jackson was my patient and I didn't really have an explanation for why he was dead,' she said.

Defendant: Conrad Murray, pictured in court today, is charged with involuntary manslaughter

Testifying: Cardiologist Dr Thao Nguyen told the court that Murray 'sounded desperate' and 'looked devastated'

On the stand: Murray's phone records were discussed by AT&T employee Edward Dixon, left, and Sprint employee Jeff Strohm

Dr Cooper said Murray only admitted giving Jackson two small amounts of the sedative lorazepam, but didn't mention giving him any other drugs, including Propofol.

Murray added that Jackson did not have any medical problems.

At one point, Dr Cooper said she went to check on Jackson's three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, in an adjoining room.

'They were crying and they were fairly hysterical. They were being comforted by their nurse,' she told the court.

A cardiologist who was working at the emergency room repeated the claim that Murray had not mentioned propofol.

Hospital cardiologist Dr Thao Nguyen also told the court that Murray made no mention of the fact he administered Propofol to Jackson, even though she quizzed him several times.

She also said Murray couldn't remember what time Jackson stopped breathing or how long he took to call 911.

In court: Janet Jackson looks toward oncoming protesters as she steps out of a vehicle on arrival at the courthouse today

Siblings: Janet Jackson and Randy Jackson arrive at the courthouse this morning

'He said he didn't have any concept of time,' she said. 'He said he didn't have a watch.'

Dr Nguyen said Murray 'sounded desperate and he looked devastated.'

But, she said, without knowing how much time had passed since he stopped breathing, resuscitation was a remote hope.

'Dr Murray asked that we not give up early and try to save Michael Jackson's life. But it was not too little, too late - it was just too late. We were running too late,' added Dr Nguyen.

Murray, 58, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter by administering a fatal dose of Propofol to Jackson.

His defence lawyers claim Jackson gave himself a fatal dose of sedatives and Propofol, which is normally administered in hospital settings.

Authorities say he administered the fatal dose and acted recklessly by providing Jackson the drug as a sleep aid.

The prosecution is continuing to call witnesses as the high-profile case enters its second week.

Three of Dr Murray's girlfriends are expected to be called to the stand this week, including a woman who he was on the phone to as he realised Jackson was unwell.

Jackson's children are reported to have chosen no to attend the trial as it is too painful, but are still willing to testify.

Their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, is relieved that they have chosen not to watch the trial, a source told TMZ.
The case continues.

Who's my special girl? Jennifer Lopez's mother dotes over her granddaughter as they jet out of Los Angeles

By GEORGINA LITTLEJOHN

Grandma loves you very much: Jennifer Lopez's mother Guadalupe dotes over her three-year-old granddaughter Emme

Her mother might be throwing herself into her career - and her new single status - since splitting from her father and jetting off to Las Vegas and New York.

But Jennifer Lopez's daughter doesn't seem to be missing her famous parent too much, not when she has a doting grandmother by her side.

Three-year-old Emme was snapped looking adorable in a pink outfit as she and her grandparents arrived at Los Angeles airport.

Stay where I can see you: Guadalupe keeps a watchful eye on Emme as she walks round the car

And she laughed and joked with her grandmother Guadalupe, who kept a close and doting eye on her little one as she danced around by the car.

And she looked the spitting image of her pop star mum, seemingly relaxed and not concerned by the camera's attention as she stood outside the terminal chatting to her Nanna.

Emme's twin brother Max was also there but was not caught on camera, possibly already inside the airport with his grandfather David.

What's so funny? Emme bursts into giggles as she shares a joke with her grandma

Can I have a cuddle? Emme snuggles into Guadalupe as they luggage is taken out of their car

The family could have been jetting off to New York to meet up with Jennifer, who has been in the Big Apple to see Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am.

On Friday, she was snapped arm-in-arm with a female friend as they hit Madison Avenue for some shopping and famous Italian eatery Nello.
